Dr Ronivin Garcia Pagtakhan

The Philippines

I am Dr. Ronivin Garcia Pagtakhan, widely known as Doc Vinn. As a registered nurse, physician, and advocate for LGBTQIA+ health, I’ve dedicated my life to uplifting marginalized communities, particularly in the Philippines. My personal mission is to champion inclusive healthcare, ensuring that everyone, regardless of gender or identity, has access to compassionate, effective care. My journey as a health advocate started early, shaped by personal experiences and an unyielding commitment to social justice. I’m also a father-to-be through surrogacy, and I value family, resilience, and lifelong learning.

Brief information about your work

I am the founder and executive leader of LoveYourself.ph, an organization that provides comprehensive sexual health services to over 100,000 clients yearly, alongside mental health support and anti-stigma programs. Our community-centered model prioritizes accessibility, cultural competence, and privacy, offering services ranging from HIV prevention and care to aesthetic and gender-affirming health. Through collaborations with national and global partners, we also manage innovative programs like mobile testing, PrEP distribution, and community-based health centers that address the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ populations and individuals affected by HIV.

What one achievement you’ve accomplished that you’re most proud of? Why?

I am most proud of establishing 22 self-sustaining community centers and 50 Community organizations all over supported through LoveYourself.ph. These centers empower local advocates to deliver essential healthcare services to underserved populations, ultimately creating a support network that embraces both identity and health needs. This achievement reflects my vision of sustainable, community-driven healthcare.

What do you find most challenging about your work? Why?

One of the most challenging aspects is addressing the stigma and misinformation surrounding LGBTQIA+ and HIV-related health issues. Stigma continues to create barriers to accessing services, and navigating this requires continuous advocacy, community education, and compassion. Changing mindsets, especially in culturally conservative settings, remains a persistent challenge.

What do you do to recharge your battery?

I find solace in spending quality time with my family and dogs, particularly in nature or peaceful settings where I can reflect. Additionally, exploring art and studying new developments in healthcare rejuvenates my spirit, as learning fuels my passion for innovation and service.

What is your vulnerability and how do you overcome it?

My vulnerability is feeling overwhelmed by the scale of the work and the community’s needs. I overcome this by focusing on incremental, impactful changes, collaborating with dedicated teams, and reminding myself that real, lasting progress takes time and collective effort.

You have been nominated for the Health and Wellbeing category. What was your reaction and please, tell us why?

I felt deeply honored and humbled. This recognition affirms the work that my team and I have been tirelessly pursuing. It strengthens my commitment to our mission, highlighting that every effort to improve LGBTQIA+ and HIV healthcare is valued and necessary.

What is a warm/hopeful message that you would like to share with the communities in the Asia Pacific?

To my fellow community members across Asia Pacific: Together, we are stronger than any obstacle we face. Let’s continue to build spaces where everyone is seen, heard, and supported, where love is at the core of our work. Remember, our resilience and unity are our greatest strengths, and with these, we will continue to uplift each other toward a healthier, more accepting future.
