Reem Sharif

Pakistan

I am a transgender woman and a member of the indigenous KhawajaSira (Hijra) culture, which has existed in the subcontinent to support transgender individuals. Born and raised in Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan, I faced rejection from my family upon coming out. This led me to relocate to Islamabad, where, due to a lack of education and skills, I resorted to prostitution for survival. Despite facing numerous challenges—such as discrimination, harassment, and violence, including rape—I persevered and earned two masters degrees: one in International Relations and another in Gender and Women Studies. My experiences have fueled my passion for advocating for the rights of transgender individuals. I dream of working towards marriage equality in Pakistan, as many in my community struggle with feelings of isolation alongside various hardships. I believe that everyone deserves love and acceptance, and I am committed to making a difference for myself and others in my community.

Brief information about your work

I am a strong advocate for the rights of the community in Pakistan, highlighted by my historic achievement as the country’s first transgender police officer in 2020. As In-Charge, I served as the primary contact for transgender individuals seeking police assistance and provided support to 365 community members during my tenure. My efforts led to the hiring of 40 more transgender officers in the police department. From 2021 to 2023, I worked as a Transgender Rights Expert in the Ministry of Human Rights, Government of Pakistan helping implement the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018. I played a crucial role in establishing Pakistan’s first Transgender Protection Centre and trained law enforcement, officers of National Database and Registration Authority and healthcare providers on best practices for interacting with transgender individuals and other related communities. In April 2023, I became the first transgender person to secure a government position at the senior management level as Deputy Director of the Transgender Protection Centre. I have supported nearly 1,000 transgender individuals alongside other community members in various governmental issues and initiated skill development courses for the community members to promote dignified livelihoods, moving away from illegal and stigmatized sources of income.

What one achievement you’ve accomplished that you’re most proud of? Why?

One of my proudest achievements is the establishment of Pakistan’s first Government Transgender Protection Centre, dedicated to rescuing, protecting, and rehabilitating transgender individuals and related communities. This center provides essential medical services, psychological support, and legal counseling tailored to the needs of transgender individuals. Additionally, the centre is committed to raising awareness among public servants, particularly within law enforcement and medical institutions, about the challenges faced by transgender individuals. By emphasizing the importance of their protection and support, the centre aims to foster a more inclusive and understanding society.

What do you find most challenging about your work? Why?

The most challenging aspect of my work is addressing the prevailing misconceptions about transgender individuals in Pakistan. Many people still view us not as transgender persons, but rather as males or females suffering from mental issues. Additionally, religious extremists often attempt to impede the progress of transgender rights in the country. While there has been a gradual shift in public attitudes due to our ongoing efforts, deeply rooted religious biases persist. At times, these challenges have made me feel that my life is at risk. Despite this, I remain committed to advocating for the rights and dignity of transgender individuals and other related communities in Pakistan.

What do you do to recharge your battery?

I am a trained Indian Classical Kathak dancer, using storytelling through dance to recharge my spirit. My performances often carry significance, expressing the grief, strength, and courage of LGBTQI communities or raising awareness about climate change. Additionally, spending time with my supportive boyfriend helps me rejuvenate. Our conversations on various topics uplift me, allowing me to regain my strength and resilience. Together, we navigate challenges, and his sensible and smart approach inspires me to face the world with renewed energy.

What is your vulnerability and how do you overcome it?

Being a transgender person inherently comes with vulnerabilities. Regardless of personal strength, there is always the risk of discrimination, harassment, stigma, or judgment. I strive for others to see me beyond my gender and recognize my qualities and skills, both personally and professionally. To combat marginalization, I focus on acquiring new skills and knowledge, ensuring I remain as competent as anyone else, regardless of gender. My goal is to demonstrate that my capabilities are not defined by societal labels, but by my determination and resilience.

You have been nominated for the Community Hero category.
What was your reaction and please, tell us why?

I was overjoyed to receive your email regarding my nomination for the Community Hero category. For years, it has been a dream of mine to be recognized as a Hero by APCOM, and this nomination feels like a step toward making that dream a reality. Many community leaders from my country have won this award, and their achievements have always inspired me to work harder in the hope that my efforts would also be acknowledged. This nomination is a powerful source of motivation, and I look forward to the possibility of holding that trophy one day in Bangkok.

What is a warm/hopeful message that you would like to share with the communities in the Asia Pacific?

I want to encourage all of you not to lose hope in the face of the challenges you encounter. Stay resilient, uplifted, and determined to create space not only for yourself but for others who share your journey. Focus on your education, skills, and talents so that you can be recognized for your true potential, regardless of gender or identity. If I could make it, I truly believe you can too. We’re in this together, and your strength will lead the way.
