Tashi Tsheten
Bhutan
I am Tashi Tsheten (He/They), an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, driven by a passion for social justice and equality. Growing up in Bhutan, I’ve remained deeply connected to my roots, which inspires my commitment to creating a more inclusive society. The relationships I’ve built with people in my community and across the region motivate me to keep pushing forward in this important work.

Brief information about your work
Currently, I serve as the Communications & Program Officer for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom South Asia. I co-founded and previously coordinated Queer Voices of Bhutan (QVoB), a platform dedicated to advocating for the rights and recognition of Bhutan’s LGBTQIA+ community. I now hold an advisory role with QVoB. Through this platform, I’ve worked on tackling the social, political, and legal challenges that impact our community. In addition, I am a Core Working Group Member of Youth Voices Count (YVC) and serve as the Alternative Co-Chair for the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA ASIA).
What one achievement you’ve accomplished that you’re most proud of? Why?
One of the achievements I’m most proud of is co-founding Queer Voices of Bhutan. Seeing QVoB grow into a platform that amplifies the voices of Bhutan’s LGBTQIA+ community has been incredibly rewarding. Together, we’ve empowered individuals to share their stories, build resilience, and advocate for necessary reforms, and I am deeply grateful for the impact we’ve had.

What do you find most challenging about your work? Why?
The most challenging aspect of my work is addressing the deeply rooted stigma and lack of understanding surrounding LGBTQIA+ issues in Bhutan and across South Asia. Change can be slow, and at times the resistance feels disheartening. Still, I believe that meaningful progress takes time, and even the smallest step forward is worthwhile.
What do you do to recharge your battery?
To recharge, I find peace in nature. Being based in New Delhi, I often miss the tranquility of my hometown. I also enjoy random reading sessions and cleaning, which help me clear my mind and restore balance.
What is your vulnerability and how do you overcome it?
One of my vulnerabilities is the emotional toll that comes with my work. The fast-paced movement, combined with the broader environment and work demands, often leads me to neglect myself. I regret that I sometimes prioritize work over time with family and friends, but I’m working on finding a better balance.

You have been nominated for the Community Hero category.
What was your reaction and please, tell us why?
Being nominated for the Community Hero category was incredibly humbling. I’m grateful for the nomination, but I see it as a tribute to the collective efforts of our community in Bhutan and across South Asia. This nomination encourages me to keep striving for justice and inclusion, knowing our shared work is making a difference.
What is a warm/hopeful message that you would like to share with the communities in the Asia Pacific?
To all the communities in the Asia Pacific and beyond, my message is one of hope and resilience. Together, we are stronger. When we unite, we create spaces where everyone feels they belong. Let’s continue to celebrate diversity and work toward a world where all individuals, regardless of identity, can live freely and with dignity. Together, we can achieve the change we seek.
