Raymond Phang

Malaysia

I am Raymond Phang, a passionate and multifaceted individual shaped by my rich cultural background and Chinese heritage from Malaysia. As a first-generation college student, I value continuous learning and personal growth. I received the Confucius Institute Scholarship and pursued Linguistics in Shanghai, China.

Co-founding ShanghaiPRIDE, China’s largest LGBTQ+ festival during my time in Shanghai, has been transformative, empowering me to drive positive change for the LGBTQ+ community. Currently pursuing an MBA at the Asia School of Business with MIT Sloan Management, I am dedicated to embracing diverse perspectives and lifelong learning. Advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion has become an integral part of my identity and purpose, motivating me to contribute to progress in China and beyond.

As a Penangite, I share the Malaysian passion for food, enjoying the hunt for great dishes and exploring new cuisines. Food not only brings joy but also creates bonds when sharing meals with friends. I also have a keen interest in films and regularly attend festivals, independent screenings, and discussions.

Tell us about your work

Professionally, I am a marketing technology and digital solutions expert, with a strong emphasis on inclusive practices. Understanding diverse audiences and creating resonant marketing solutions are at the core of my work. I firmly believe in the power of representation and continuously embrace innovation to navigate the dynamic technology and consumer behaviour landscape.

My successful track record in the industry includes leading teams and overseeing key global clients, resulting in significant revenue growth, and identifying new business opportunities. Enhancing customer experiences in the digital realm and driving strategic growth plans are central aspects of my work.

Passionate about new technology and global markets, I aspire to expand further into the intersection of digital commerce and technology, focusing on strategic management and innovation. My interest in emerging markets drives me to explore global opportunities, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Moreover, I am committed to driving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and being an inclusive leader, especially in the Asian context. My goal is to foster a more inclusive and accepting professional environment while making a positive impact in the field of marketing technology and digital solutions.

What one achievement you’ve accomplished that you’re most proud of? Why?

The achievement I am most proud of is co-founding ShanghaiPRIDE, China’s largest LGBTQ+ festival which includes 30+ Team Leaders and 100+ volunteers. Since 2010, through this initiative, I have fostered connections, advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, and created a platform for celebrating diversity in China. Witnessing the positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community and being part of this positive change fills me with immense pride. Additionally, being recognized as a Fellowship Recipient at the Harvard Kennedy School International LGBTQI+ Activism Summit 2023 in Boston, USA, for my contributions to advancing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility was a gratifying moment.

What do you find most challenging about your work? Why?

The most challenging aspect of my work is navigating societal norms and discrimination, especially in a country where LGBTQ+ rights still face challenges. China’s current LGBTQ+ situation, including government crackdowns and censorships on LGBTQ+ events and organizations, adds complexity to our advocacy efforts. Overcoming these barriers requires resilience, determination, and a commitment to promoting inclusivity and acceptance. Continuous dialogue, education, and building bridges with stakeholders are essential to address these challenges and pave the way for a more inclusive and accepting world for the LGBTQ+ community in China.

What do you do to recharge your battery?

To recharge, I engage in self-care activities such as spending time with loved ones, practicing mindfulness, and exploring nature. These moments of rest and rejuvenation help me maintain a positive outlook and continue my advocacy work. Additionally, I indulge in creative activities like writing and public speaking, providing moments of reflection and self-expression. Playing badminton, swimming, and enjoying coffee and films are also part of my recharge routine, helping me find balance and inspiration in my life.

What is your vulnerability and how do you overcome it?

My vulnerability lies in balancing personal and professional responsibilities. To overcome it, I practice time management, set clear boundaries, and seek support from my community. Acknowledging my limitations and asking for help when needed has been crucial in maintaining my well-being. Additionally, I deal with occasional self-doubt by practicing self-affirmation, seeking support from my community, and reminding myself of the positive impact of my work. I also recognize that setbacks and failures are opportunities for growth, seeking support from my network and engaging them as motivators to success.

You have been nominated for the Community Hero category.
What was your reaction and please, tell us why?

Upon being nominated for the Community Hero category, I felt humbled and honoured. This nomination validates the impact of my advocacy work and encourages me to continue fighting for equality and inclusivity in the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. The recognition affirms the importance of LGBTQ+ advocacy and reaffirms the significance of my work in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion. This recognition motivates me to continue being an advocate, ally and fostering positive change, striving for equality and social change.

What is a warm/hopeful message that you would like to share with the communities in the Asia Pacific? (or anything else you would like to share)

To the communities in the Asia Pacific, let us stand together in solidarity and embrace diversity. Together, we can build an inclusive and accepting world, valuing, and respecting every individual’s unique contribution. Let us support and uplift one another on our collective journey towards a more equitable future. In the face of challenges, I offer a message of hope and resilience. Celebrating diversity, we can create a future where everyone is embraced and celebrated for who they are. United in our pursuit of inclusivity, let us work towards a society where everyone can thrive and take pride in their identity. Embracing diversity, supporting one another, and fostering inclusivity, we will create a brighter future for all.
