An Interview with the Director of Bang Na District Office on Marriage Equality

By February 6, 2026 Advocacy, Showcase

On 23 January, as Thailand marked the first anniversary of Marriage Equality, APCOM partnered with the Bang Na District Office to spotlight how equality is being realised at the community level. As part of this milestone, APCOM interviewed Ms. Prapassorn Jamnongbutr, Director of Bang Na District Office, who shared reflections on the law’s impact one year after its implementation.

Over the past year, 144 same-sex couples have officially registered their marriages in Bang Na, a powerful indicator of growing trust in public institutions and a positive shift in social attitudes. In the interview, Ms. Prapassorn emphasised that Marriage Equality is not only about the union of two people, but about legal recognition that improves quality of life and affirms a fundamental truth: human is human, regardless of gender.

Her message also carried a heartfelt wish for every couple to live with dignity, happiness, and lasting love, reminding us that Marriage Equality is more than legislation. It is lived every day through people, families, and communities.

Over the past year since Thailand enacted the Marriage Equality law, how many same-sex couples have registered their marriages at Bang Na District Office? How do you feel about this number?

Over the past year, 144 same-sex couples have registered their marriages at Bang Na District Office. This is truly something to celebrate for every couple. I believe that each registration carries deep meaning and reflects the trust that couples place in the system, as well as the fact that equality is genuinely being realised in our district.

How has the Marriage Equality law impacted Thai society?

The first year of Marriage Equality is a very important reflection of Thailand’s social progress. It shows that Thai society has become more open, more accepting of gender diversity, and places greater importance on human dignity and equality.

Allowing couples of all genders to legally register their marriages is not only about individual relationships. It also represents progress in human rights and demonstrates Thailand’s readiness to move forward with understanding, mutual respect, and inclusivity.

As the authority responsible for marriage registration, how has Bang Na District Office prepared or adapted to ensure that all couples feel equal and comfortable when accessing services?

We place great importance on creating a service environment that is friendly, equal, and respectful of diversity. This includes preparing and adjusting our work processes, as well as providing guidance and training for our staff to ensure they use appropriate language and attitudes, avoid discrimination, and deliver services with understanding and respect.

On the occasion of the first anniversary of Marriage Equality, what message would you like to share with same-sex couples who are considering registering their marriage?

I would like to extend my congratulations to all same-sex couples. Marriage registration is not only a legal matter, but also an affirmation of the value, commitment, and responsibility that partners share with one another.

For those who are considering taking this step, I warmly encourage you to proceed with confidence. Bang Na District Office is fully prepared to provide services with respect, equality, and genuine welcome.

Are there any activities or initiatives this year or in the near future at Bang Na District Office that you would like to share with the public?

This year, Bang Na District Office will continue to carry out its mission of providing close and accessible services to the public, including civil registration services, public service facilitation, and activities that promote quality of life for people in the district.

We invite everyone to stay updated on news and activities through Bang Na District Office’s official communication channels, so that you do not miss the services and initiatives that we are committed to delivering for all members of the community.

Thank you Bangna District Office for seeing the importance of Marriage Equality and let us be part of the event.

Looking forward to our future collaborations.
