“Another session that deeply resonated with me was on intersectional feminist organizing in the Global South.“

Attending the AWID conference for the first time was a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with feminist activists, advocates, and funders from around the world who share a commitment to advancing human rights. Representing an LBTQ organization fighting against violence and advocating for equality, I felt empowered by the solidarity and diversity of voices present. The sessions I attended, such as My Body, My Superpower, Fem Defense, Self-Defense for Activists, and Weathering the Anti-Rights Storms Using Future Thinking and more, were incredibly impactful. They offered practical tools, creative strategies, and visionary approaches to resisting oppression, fostering resilience, and reclaiming agency amidst growing challenges to feminist and LBTQ rights.

One of the highlights of my participation was being a speaker in the panel discussion LBTQ Speaking Up. It was a powerful experience to share the stage with other GAC partner from Southeast Asia and discuss our organization’s journey through the APCOM and GAC project.

I talked about undergoing an organizational diagnosis, how we created a small grant based on the findings, and the subsequent implementation of the grant. I also shared insights into the current situation for LBTQ individuals in our region, including the challenges and progress we’ve made. The session was well-received and fostered meaningful discussions about the importance of investing in grassroots initiatives to drive sustainable change.

Another session that deeply resonated with me was on intersectional feminist organizing in the Global South. It highlighted how systems of oppression intersect to impact marginalized communities, and the strategies shared provided actionable insights to enhance our advocacy efforts. Informal conversations with other feminists and funders outside the sessions were equally enriching, offering opportunities to share experiences, challenges, and potential collaborations.

The conference was instrumental in amplifying LBTQ advocacy, particularly in Asia and the Pacific, by creating a platform for global solidarity and elevating the voices of underrepresented communities.

For the next AWID conference, I hope to see more grassroots activists from the Philippines and attend to see and experience these dedicated spaces for LBTQ strategizing, and deeper discussions on intersectional approaches to critical issues like climate justice, economic inequality, and digital rights. These additions would further strengthen the global feminist movement and ensure tangible outcomes for the rights and well-being of LBTQ individuals worldwide.
